Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro: A Month by Month Guide

July 10, 2026 2 Cent Billion Africa Safaris Team

Mount Kilimanjaro can technically be climbed at any time of year, but choosing the right season makes a real difference to your comfort on the mountain and your chances of a clear summit day. Tanzania's weather on Kilimanjaro follows two dry seasons and two wet seasons, and understanding them is the first step in planning your climb.

The Two Dry Seasons

The most popular months to climb are late June to October and late December to March. These periods fall within Tanzania's dry seasons, meaning less rain on the lower slopes, clearer skies for summit views, and firmer trails underfoot.

  • June to October coincides with the Northern Hemisphere summer holidays and the Serengeti's dry season game viewing, so it is the busiest time on the mountain. Expect cold nights at higher camps but generally stable weather.
  • January to March is quieter on the trails and often brings the clearest summit conditions of the year, although it can be colder at altitude than the June to October window.

The Wet Seasons

The long rains fall from mid March through May, and the short rains arrive in November. Climbing during these months is possible and some trekkers prefer the near-empty trails, but expect muddier paths, more cloud cover, and a higher chance of rain at lower elevations.

Choosing a Route for Your Season

Whichever month you choose, your route also affects your experience. Routes such as Machame and Lemosho offer better acclimatization profiles and higher success rates than shorter, steeper routes, regardless of season. If you are climbing during the wetter months, a route with hut accommodation, such as Marangu, can offer extra shelter from the rain.

Packing for Any Season

Regardless of when you climb, Kilimanjaro takes you through five distinct climate zones, from tropical rainforest at the base to arctic conditions at the summit. Layered clothing, a warm sleeping bag, and good waterproofs are essential no matter which month you choose.

Whether you are aiming for the classic dry season window or considering a quieter shoulder month, our team can help you match the right route and season to your travel dates. Browse our Kilimanjaro climbing packages to start planning your trek.
